Le Val Saint Hilaire

The owner was helpful, the rooms were okay and the price was fair. There were three of us here for a bike ride around the Ardennes, and this place suited us perfectly. If you come expecting a superb hotel experience with amazing food, your expectations are simply too high. For a good price, the hotel does the job.

The views are beautiful and the location is great, but the room smelled bad and musty, the lights didn't work, and there were questionable hairs in the bathroom and shower. The general neglect felt unpleasant rather than charming. I've stayed in better €30 hostel rooms. The owner seemed carelessly disinterested. Also, you might end up in the hotel down the road, since the two are connected. A thoroughly unpleasant experience. Avoid.

Early check-in and the fact that dogs are welcome were pluses. We got the ground-floor room we asked for, but it was right by reception, with the windows facing the outdoor restaurant. The window beside my bed opened directly onto someone's table, and the noise carried on until around midnight. The room was functional and pretty clean, though tight. The bathroom was okay, but there was barely one roll of toilet paper left. In my opinion, that shouldn't happen at a hotel presenting itself as three-star, and this definitely isn't a three-star hotel. Breakfast was passable, but about 70% of the tables were dirty when we arrived. The breakfast staff were chatting and smoking outside, and they weren't keen to refill the breakfast bar. It was nearly empty, even though a group of eight people was still due shortly after us. I worked in a hotel myself and found that unacceptable. It's kind of okay for one night, but that's it.

A nice old-style hotel in a really pleasant location, and the price is reasonable. The reception was super friendly and waited for me when I arrived late.
