Premiere Classe Honfleur

Our room was clean and the bed was comfortable, and the quiet location meant we slept peacefully. It was a pleasant enough stay at the Première Classe Hotel in Honfleur, though there are a few things to know. The rooms have no air conditioning, which could be uncomfortable in hot weather. Breakfast costs €6.20 and isn't included automatically, so book it when you reserve. Reception is only open at certain times, and in our case the room wasn't ready at the official check-in time. The cleaning staff seemed disorganized. In summer, the parking can fill quickly. There's a gate and a small entrance, but both stay open around the clock, so the parking didn't feel especially secure. A reasonable budget choice if you keep your expectations modest.

We paid about €70 with breakfast, and for that price it handled the basics well. The hotel is clean and nicely presented, and the staff were friendly and mostly professional. Breakfast ran several minutes late one morning, but otherwise things went well. The rooms are small but practical, as is the little en-suite bathroom. The shower reminded me of one on a caravan or overnight ferry, though it had plenty of hot water. Breakfast was a simple continental spread: fresh croissants, baguette, wholemeal sliced bread and a toaster, yoghurts, preserves, orange juice and a coffee machine with plenty of choices. There wasn't any fresh fruit, meat or cheese, so it wasn't ideal for a low-carb diet. You can walk into Honfleur, though the location isn't the best for that. There are a few places to eat and grocery shops nearby, and Amoretto is about ten minutes away for good-value Italian food. It's a straightforward budget hotel, and I'd recommend it for an overnight stay.

The staff deserve full marks. We were on a long bike-packing trip and had to change our stay and sort out bike arrangements after one bike broke. Natalie and her team were lovely, attentive and friendly, and made it all much easier. The room was very clean, with good towels and soap, but it was tiny, stuffy with no air conditioning, and quite noisy. Smoke came in through the back windows. The bathroom was a small plastic caravan-style setup with a clingy curtain. Breakfast was basic but enough, though there were no savoury items. The outside area was excellent, with covered spots to eat and relax, cushioned seats, a pétanque pitch and table tennis. Parking was secure. It's a bit of a walk into town along a nice back-street route. We weren't keen on the McDonalds next door and had an awful last-minute meal there, so eat in town. For comfort, it's probably fine for a couple of nights, but the limited room space could be difficult for longer.
