A must-see in La Rochelle, with a great selection of fresh seafood, meat, cheese, and products from local farmers.

We visited on a Wednesday and found lots of fruit and vegetable stalls in the square and road outside, as well as the covered market itself. It’s wheelchair accessible from the front. Inside, there’s all kinds of fresh food, especially fish and seafood, and it’s a pleasure to browse. Check prices before buying, since similar produce could vary quite a bit in price. Well worth a visit!

Everything was sold in a very clean setting. There’s fresh local produce here, including vegetables, raw meat, cheese, oysters, seafood, cooked dishes, ham, and other ready-to-eat food. On Wednesdays, an open market sets up around here too, with more artisan breads, cakes, pastries, and dried fruit.

The square is lined with old buildings and has plenty of cafés, making this a nice part of town to visit. The market was packed whenever I went, mostly with locals, and the food was amazing. There wasn’t a decent-sized supermarket in the centre that I could see, so I’m guessing the big ones are out of town, but it’s lovely to see people buying from a local market instead. I was there over the weekend, and the indoor and outdoor stalls were open both days. The outside bakery stalls were top drawer, and the cheese selection inside was just as good. The tomme with 7 flowers was one of the best cheeses I’ve ever had. If you’re in town, come and enjoy the local food, and see what we’re missing!
