The owner, Rosemary, was attentive and gave us a warm welcome. The room smelled nice at first, but as the night went on there was a sewage smell. We also had to remove a dead fly, and two lizards tried to get inside when we opened the window. Breakfast was okay, nothing special.

Rosemary Conquest emailed to say she’d made a mistake with our booking and had to cancel because she’d already booked a wedding for the same dates. I was stunned. I’d reserved one of the houses at the manoir in December 2019 for a week in July 2021 for our family, and paid the requested deposit immediately to secure it. I’d only contacted our host last week to check that everything was still in order. A wedding for 100 guests is obviously more profitable than renting a house to six people. After more than a year of confinement, people are looking forward to a normal holiday. How can you handle a booking this way without even offering the full compensation the law stipulates? The Manoir de la Foulquetière may be beautiful, but its owners are odious.

The antiques in the 15th century buildings are a real treat to look at, and the place has a lovely blend of British and French character, with a British owner. Rosemary is a sweetheart. It’s also an amazing, romantic spot to get married. I highly recommend a stay at Manour de la Foulquetière!
