Hôtel du Rocher

We fit our Ford Transit campervan in the free on-site parking, and the receptionist was friendly. It’s a small motel on the outskirts of Marseille, near a very good local microbrewery. The A/C struggled in the 30 degree summer heat, though.

I booked a room with a shared bathroom and found it dirty, with spiderwebs and bugs and mosquitoes already inside. The furniture was old and worn, and both the toilet and showers were dirty. There was just one toilet for more than six rooms. A nearby supermarket starts getting stocked from 3AM, so the trucks were noisy, with general noise and beeping as they reversed.

It’s a family-run place, cheap and close to AixMarseille University-Luminy, with good bus connections to both the city center and Luminy. But the receptionist and staff only spoke French. Internet was slow: 1.27Mbit/s download and 0.26 upload, later dropping to 0.52Mbit/s down and 0.14mBit/s upload, with 64ms latency. The bedroom had cold tiles and the bathroom had mould and mildew. I had to pay in cash and ask for a bill. Breakfast was expensive, though it isn’t mandatory.

I waited until 5 pm for a room that still wasn’t ready. The staff were a little unprofessional and somewhat disrespectful. One of my worst experiences, I can’t recommend it.
