Mercure Nice Promenade Des Anglais

Waking up to the sea view was really special, and the upgrade to a sea-view room as an Accor Gold member made the stay even better. The location is just perfect, right on the Promenade with everything easy to get to. We had a wonderful stay and will definitely be back.

The worst Mercure/Accor hotel I’ve stayed in, despite being an All Accor member and knowing what I usually expect. There was no welcome water in the room, and we got no recognition for our room category or loyalty membership. The rooms were dated and threadbare, with a sewer smell in the lobby and ice-cold showers. We’d called ahead, given the reservation name, and were told we could check in at 2pm. After travelling all day, we were counting on a few hours’ rest. Instead, the room wasn’t ready, and none of the three receptionists apologized. We waited 45 minutes in a lobby with no air conditioning on a very hot day. The hotel didn’t tell us it was being renovated, so drills and heavy equipment made it impossible to sleep during the day. They should at least have mentioned the work on the website. We’d booked for one night because of the location on the Promenade de Anglais and the direct route to Cote d’Azure airport, but they also failed to mention the Promenade would be closed for the Paris-Nice bike race. No cars, taxis, or Ubers could reach the hotel all weekend, with traffic shut for two days. Good luck catching a flight and finding a taxi. We got up at 5am to check out and walk several blocks away from the Promenade to find a taxi. There wasn’t any hot water, so we couldn’t even shower. If sewer smells, worn-out rooms, and cold showers sound good to you, this is the place.

Our room looked out over the sea and Albert -st Park, which was a lovely bonus during the carnival. The hotel is also handy for the Promenade des Anglais and Old Town, with good restaurants nearby and excellent public transport links. We’re loyal ALL customers, so we know these hotels are comfortable. The one thing we could’ve used was some warning about the building work, which started early every day except Sunday. And don’t bother with the hotel breakfast, there are great places to eat within a five-minute walk.

The location was good, but the noise ruined the stay. We hadn’t been warned before booking or at check-in about the major renovation and drilling. Even with rain outside, the pounding made it impossible to rest in our room. The hotel offered no apology, just said the work would continue until 6pm. We had to go find somewhere else to spend the day in the rain because the noise was unbearable.
