Avoid room 32. At 5 a.m., what seemed to be the AC water pump started vibrating like an alarm bell.

Really good.

My room was upstairs, bright, and quiet, with a simple modern look. The bathroom seemed newly renovated and the shower had great pressure. Breakfast had a good selection of eggs, meat, cheese, yoghurt, and juice, and I liked that coffee and tea were available whenever I wanted. Reception is staffed around the clock, and they’ll store your bags before or after checkout. It was my first time staying in La Republique, and I was pleasantly surprised. Transport links made it a handy base for daytime meetings in central Paris, and I could spend the evenings around Canal St Martin. If the price is reasonable, this is a great option.

The room was small but pleasant, and the location is central and convenient. But those points couldn’t make up for a night when the constant noise from the ventilation shaft made it almost impossible to sleep. I used the hotel’s contact form overnight to ask for a room change and got no reply. I raised it again at checkout, but wasn’t offered a discount or any compensation. Paying nearly €200 for one night and barely sleeping was frustrating, especially with so little response or care from the hotel.
