The dinners felt like being invited to a friend's home: Sylvie served elegantly simple, homemade food in the beautifully restored dining room, changing the menu each night. She even adjusted the first course to a green salad and brought berries instead of her delicious homemade desserts when we were full after days of indulging. There are lovely places outside to sit, including poolside loungers where we listened to the bamboo and tried their house wine. Inside, the comfortable rooms and guest sitting room mix beautiful antiques with stylish modern touches. Breakfast was plentiful, with cooked eggs available for an extra charge, and every room has a kettle and a lovely tea selection, one of many little signs of Sylvie's care. A charming, peaceful base for exploring the Bordeaux area.

We chose half board again, and the food was exceptional: a generous breakfast, then home-cooked dinners made with fresh local produce, plus lovely cheese and wine. This was our second stay at Château des Salles, and we already plan to return. Sylvie and Jean-Jacques were warm, helpful hosts, sharing local advice and arranging a tour and tasting at a nearby vineyard that we found excellent value and quality. The château is clean, comfortable, and full of character. We also enjoyed unwinding by the pool with a drink. It really felt like staying in friends' home.

The room was airy and spacious, with a very large, comfortable bed, and the pool area was a peaceful place to relax with the bamboo sounds in the background. Sylvie made sure we had the food and drinks we needed, and we ate at Chateau des Salles both nights. The meals were great, and we added the extra cheese each time. My husband and I stayed for a couple of nights and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Chateau des Salles for a holiday where you can properly unwind.

Saint Fort makes a handy stop between La Rochelle and Bordeaux, with vineyards all around and a small port not far away. We often come to the area on holiday and have eaten here many times. The menu changes and is always a pleasure, with usually two starters, two plats, and two desserts to choose from. The chef is very good, and the price feels reasonable for an elegant dinner in a Chateau. The 15th-century building has been much restored by Sylvia and Jean-Jacques, who are a friendly, helpful couple. It has been in their family since the 1990s. Highly recommended.

The food and drink are good, as you'd expect in one of the world's top wine-producing areas, and the location makes it easy to get around. What stood out most to me was Sylvie's attention. She's on hand from morning to evening with advice and time for a chat, even while managing the Château.
