The price, €100 a night, felt completely out of line with the stay we had. The room linens and hand towels did not seem clean, and the parking was outside the property, with keys needed to get out of the grounds. At breakfast our host spent the whole meal talking loudly on the phone. She served my boiled egg while still on the call, and I had to interrupt to ask for salt. There was no mention of her brother's death, despite that being offered later as an explanation for the room issue. We were left waiting at the front gate with our luggage while the owner emptied the rubbish and chatted with a neighbor. The room we had requested because it had a bath was initially unavailable because someone was in it. Then we were told it had not been fully cleaned, and later that the mix-up was due to her brother having died the night before. Really? The building is structurally beautiful, but it is crowded with worthless knick-knacks, while notices and flyers are taped everywhere. Maybe our one-night booking simply wasn't worth the attention to detail needed to host travelers properly.

The chateau has loads of character, and our hostess was wonderful. Breakfast was fabulous, all homemade.

We stayed for two nights in August. The floors are very old, though they were clean when we arrived. The host was warm and welcoming, which is what the two stars are for. Still, we regretted agreeing when asked to pay in cash. There was dust in the accommodation, and the dishes and kitchen utensils were dirty or sticky. The refrigerator barely kept things cold. The shower door wouldn't shut fully, so water ended up everywhere, and the windows didn't close properly. There is no air conditioning. Since the accommodation is on the third and top floor, summer nights are hard, even with the two small fans provided. Neither the kitchen nor the small living room has windows. The outdoor photos don't match what we found: the garden was completely neglected, and the jacuzzi wasn't in use. The pool is covered and gets stiflingly hot in strong sun. Swimming is not allowed from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

We’ve now been three times, and had another wonderful weekend at the Count's Castle. Marcelline is a warm, welcoming host, the rooms are tastefully decorated, and breakfast is generous. I highly recommend it.

The hostess made our stay feel special, with so much enthusiasm and lots of thoughtful little touches. The hammam was wonderful and felt just like home. We even got to pick citrus fruits from her garden and take some with us! A magical experience, I highly recommend it.
