Aretxola Maison d'hôtes

The jams, jellies, preserves and confitures were the best I’ve ever had, and breakfast was great. It’s a charming chambre d'hote with nature right outside, perfect for slowing down and recharging. The Bijou room got quite warm, so we left the window open and my poor wife got eaten by midges. I was fine, though, so no complaints 😜 We should’ve used the midge spray. It’s well located, but you’ll need a car to see everything around here. If you’re visiting out of season, make a dinner plan for Sunday night or you could go hungry. Highly recommend this place for a chilled reset.

We spent 13 nights at Maison Aretxola and had a dream holiday in the Pays Basque. Our room was in the old sheepfold, very spacious, with a big bathroom and tasteful furnishings. From the bed and the terrace, the views were wonderful, with nature all around. We loved everything, from the house and breakfast room to the garden and pool. Our host was very friendly. Our French and her English were both limited, but that didn’t affect the warmth between us. At breakfast there was a huge selection of homemade jams, and special requests like cheese were no problem at all. The location worked perfectly for all sorts of outings: walks starting at the house or nearby trail parking areas, bike rides, trips to the Atlantic beaches, and visits to the many lovely villages and towns nearby. We still haven’t seen it all, so perhaps we’ll come back one day. If we do, it’ll be to Maison Aretxola!

The garden feels like paradise, and the house is a dream, surrounded by nature and animals. Our room was comfortable and spotless, with breathtaking views from the window. Trinidad was lovely and looked after us so well. Breakfasts were incredible: homemade jam, wonderful croissants, different breads, local cheeses, coffee and homemade apple juice. We could also use the fully equipped kitchen. We loved Canela, her beautiful dog, along with the three cats and the chickens. When our car broke down, Trinidad helped us with everything. She lent us her bicycles and even drove us to the first town in Spain, where a taxi from our car insurance picked us up. The house is ideally placed for visiting coastal towns and hiking in the mountains. The nearby Sare Caves are beautiful, and I highly recommend the guided tour. I’d love to live there with Trinidad, and we’ll be back many times. Thank you again, Trinidad, for your kindness and for making those days unforgettable. I absolutely recommend staying at her house.
