The hosts were welcoming and nice, but that couldn’t make up for how awful the room was. We paid 1500 euro for three nights and got something between a jail cell and a bunker. There was no balcony, and no windows except for one tiny 10 cm by 10 cm opening about seven feet up. There was no natural light, and the room looked nothing like the website pictures. It was noisy, too, with no soundproofing at all, so we could hear everything from the next room. The furniture was basic, without even a chair to sit on or a coffee table. The place felt far from luxurious, and the shared living spaces were small. The location is also far from the town center. Catching the shuttle after hours was difficult, especially after waiting 25 minutes in the cold. And if you don’t speak English, you’re out of luck. It was a real disappointment.

The food and atmosphere were a huge part of what made my week. On my first evening, Steve and Louise, the chefs at Chalet Amelie and the culinary king and queen of Espace Killy, served what may have been the best food outside Paris. Dinner each night began with canapés, followed by a thoughtful three-course meal and local cheeses. The menus stayed varied and delicious, and they used the best ingredients to cook for about 28 guests. It was sociable sharing dinner with everyone, and I enjoyed having a drink with the chefs and hosts afterwards. Wine was included and kept flowing, along with cocktails made by the chalet’s expert mixologists. Breakfast had everything you could want before a day on the slopes or a table at Coco Rico, the best après bar in town. This was my third visit to Val d'Isere and the Espace Killy region, and Chalet Amelie and its incredible staff made it the trip of a lifetime. The chalet is in Le Fornet, at the upper end of the resort, just a one minute walk from the cable car up the glacier, one of the best ski areas in the region. Free buses run regularly day and night through central Val d'Isere and down to La Daille. When I arrived, my friendly French-speaking host Will showed me to a cosy, spotless room. Will, Jazz, and Krysia were a pleasure to spend the week with. They were very accommodating, offered tips on where to eat during the day, and even joined me on the slopes to show me good places to ski around the resort. They worked hard to keep the chalet spotless and still made everyone feel welcome. They’re a real credit to the place and deserve big bonuses at the end of the season. There was plenty to enjoy back at the chalet, including a private kitchen area and fridge, a homely lounge, roaring fires, a large TV with English channels, and balconies with stunning mountain views. The mood was fun and sociable, and I still got a great night’s sleep in one of the comfiest beds in France. For me, Chalet Amelie has the best setting, staff, and food in the resort. Anyone after a fun but relaxing trip to Val d'Isere should give it a try. Thanks to Steve, Louise, Will, Jazz, and Krysia for the best week. I hope to come back next year.

The location is ideal, close to the cable car but still quiet. Staff were friendly, and the rooms were comfortable, though really small.

The food felt very British, and the rooms were small and basic. You can hear everything because there’s no insulation. I can’t say it was worth the price or the reviews.

Everything from the facilities and staff to the place itself was excellent. I only stayed one night, but I hope to come back for a longer visit next year.
