The buffet was good overall, with plenty of choice and good quality produce, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The club also has direct access to the slopes. But our week-long ski holiday at Club Med val d’Isère with our two teenage kids left us feeling the place was overrated and overpriced. We booked a suite for ourselves and a room for the kids, yet the suite cost twice as much despite being the same size. Its view was poor, and snow left uncleared blocked it completely all week, even after we asked the hotel to clear it. It felt claustrophobic. We also found the spa expensive and mediocre. The massage felt like someone just stroking and moving their hands around, with no real skill. During the ski lessons, we paid for three hours a day but got just two hours of instruction. The remaining hour went on the gondola and bus journeys up and down. At €145 an hour, that meant paying €145 for travel to and from the hotel, which we could manage ourselves. When we questioned why a third of the lesson time was spent commuting instead of learning, the only answer we got was that it was the rule. Club Med Val d’Iser is presented as a 5 tridents Exclusive Collection resort, but it was far from an exclusive experience for us. Never again.
The restaurants and ski school made this our best ski holiday by far, and the best Club Med I’ve stayed at. I’ve been on more than 15 Club Med holidays, mostly ski trips, and this one with my kids, aged 16 and 10, stood out. We ate especially well at Les Millésimes, with a late lunch after skiing at 3PM and a great dinner served by a fantastic waitress. The instructors were highly professional. Elsa taught the kids’ reg group, and Laurent, Malo and especially Gaspar helped turn a good holiday into an unforgettable one. Kudos to Richard, the ski school director. The class sizes were good too. The place feels cozy and is well maintained. Everyone was welcoming, smiling and keen to help. Requests for minibar refills, towels and bathrobes were handled right away. The kids loved their spa treatments, and my yoga session with Juliette was excellent. Staff in the shop and at reception were helpful, especially Neomi. We’ll definitely be back!
The rooms were very clean and comfortable, but I’ve stayed at quite a few Club Meds and this one was missing that cheerful, friendly, helpful feel. There was no fun in the evening shows, and most of the food tasted a little cold, so the warmers could be better. For the most expensive Club Med I’ve visited, I expected a better steak than the flank they served. The ski instructor should teach more technique instead of just telling you to follow.
I relied on the hotel manager Axel’s promise that I’d get a refund for unused nights if I left early. After a long conversation in which I explained why staying wasn’t possible, I agreed to move out and pay for another place. I would never have paid for two hotels if Club Med hadn’t firmly promised the refund. Now that I’ve relocated and paid extra, they refuse to honor that promise and point to the terms and conditions. I relied on a Club Med representative’s word, and the company is acting as if the conversation never happened. If needed, I’ll pursue this legally and ask for the hotel’s CCTV to be reviewed, and I’m ready to contact consumer protection authorities. I booked expecting the service and environment advertised, but the actual stay was overcrowded and noisy, full of children, with none of the promised atmosphere or facilities for a comfortable adult stay. From the start, things didn’t match the website. Group activities were said to be open to all levels, but I was refused a place on arrival and had to pay an extra €650 for private lessons just to ski. There was no quiet place to relax and no proper bar as advertised. It felt more like a children’s camp than a resort. This was outright deception and the worst customer experience I’ve ever had. I’ll never return to Club Med, and I’d strongly advise others to avoid it unless they want stress, disappointment and financial loss. Their promises mean nothing once they have your money.
The mini club team were superb and made the stay exceptional for our daughter, so this is a fantastic place for families with kids. Our room was spacious and clean, and the food was high quality with lots of choice at every meal. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with smiles and wonderful service that continued all week.
