Hôtel de France

Vatan is a small town with a nice charm, and our stay at Hôtel de France turned a car breakdown into a warm, comfortable stop. The hotel was spotless, the room was comfortable, and breakfast was delicious. The other owner makes great pizzas in the evening, too, and I’d recommend eating there. We’d love to come back. When our car broke down during our trip through France, we were stranded on a Sunday outside a closed garage. I called Hôtel de France, and owner Marie-Ange quickly arranged a room and personally picked us up. She offered to take us back later and even called the garage to ask about the repair. That kind of hospitality is rare.

We had dinner at the restaurant and really enjoyed the evening. The welcome was very warm, and our classic room was comfortable, with a good bed and recently renovated decor. A small, unpretentious hotel, and we appreciated the hospitality.

I ordered a vegetarian pizza today and couldn’t manage even one bite. It was badly burnt underneath and on top, as the photos show. I told the staff it was “tres fortement brûlée,” but they still made me pay. I can’t believe they served it like that.

The calzone was generously filled and really tasty, with a cream base and Valençay cheese, and it came with salad. I finished with a delicious crème brûlée-style caramel cream and a large coffee. The pizza dough was proper homemade dough, and I had a very good meal with a warm welcome. I recommend the pizzeria.
