Hôtel du Jeu de Paume

Parking takes some effort, but after driving around a few times we found a free spot for the night. Paid parking is easy to find too. The apartments are very suitable and well located, and I can honestly recommend staying here.

The staff were so friendly and really went out of their way to help us. The rooms are small, but they have what you need. It’s a cute little hotel, handy for the Palace and surrounded by places to eat.

I remember staying here with my parents fifty years ago. The hotel is in one of Versailles’ oldest buildings, and back in 1974 you could see the original medieval timber framework inside. It’s sadly covered up now. The street itself is even older than the Palace, and anyone interested in the French Revolution will find the Jeu de Paume tennis court only a few metres away, where a key event took place. There are plenty of good bars and restaurants right nearby, and the Palace of Versailles is about a three-minute walk away. The boutique hotel is charming and comfortable. Its one drawback is the lack of A/C, with only a desktop fan, so bear that in mind as Paris summers keep getting hotter.

We skipped breakfast since we usually like exploring the city and trying its restaurants. In our room, we had tea and Nescafé, and the bathroom was a nice feature. There was no way to ventilate it directly, though, so we had to open the room windows to air it out, which the mosquitoes appreciated. The room was tidy and smelled pleasant, maybe a little too perfumed, but tastes differ. The person at the desk was friendly, and the location is great for Versailles. We had a comfortable, pleasant stay.
