My fiance and I checked into the Mercure Aberdeen Caledonian Hotel looking forward to the stay, and were pleased to hear our room overlooked Union gardens. For Aberdeen, that was a nice view. The hotel has plenty of character, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. After that, though, the stay was a letdown. We were there Friday to Monday and didn’t get one good night’s sleep. Several nightclubs opposite and nearby can play music until 2 or 3am, and Revolution was so loud on all three nights that we couldn’t sleep until well after 2am, even on Sunday. Don’t stay here if you value your sleep. I’m incredibly disappointed.
The location is great and the staff are very friendly. The price is lower than other hotels, and it’s clear why. The hotel is noisy and poorly maintained, with furniture falling apart. Room 402’s floors slope to one side, something I’ve never seen in my life. For a four-star hotel, everything beyond the location and staff is very poor. I wouldn’t even call it three-star quality. If this is the service guests will get, the hotel should be listed as two or three stars so people aren’t misled.
The location is perfect, the staff are friendly, and the rooms are fine, though they don’t look as luxurious as they might seem. Breakfast was the real problem. I get that this is Scotland and British breakfast is a thing, but it’s 2025 and not everyone can eat fried, oily, fatty food every morning. Some people want a healthy breakfast, and what was served felt inedible, all fat and sugar. They should offer hard-boiled eggs alongside the fried ones, and some fresh cucumber or tomatoes.
Afternoon tea was delightful again today. The Chef now makes everything from scratch, and you can taste it. Natalie served us so kindly and attentively, she deserves recognition. 10/10.
The staff, decent breakfast and comfy beds are what kept this from being a two-star review. The hotel itself is okay, with a decent central location, but the noise at the front is insanely loud. There are two clubs right opposite: Revolution shuts at 2am, and the other stays open until 4am during the week. One staff member said the rear rooms and internal rooms are silent, and two colleagues who stayed at the back confirmed it. If you want a decent sleep, don’t get a room at the front. Triple glazing at the front could make this a five-star stay. I’ll come back, but to the back. Shame, because the view from the front is great. Three stars is generous, I’m probably over tired.
