I’ve stayed here many times, and it’s one of my favourite places in the Lakes. The hostel is about a 15-minute walk from the centre of ambleside, but the incredible view over Windermere lake makes it worth it. The beer garden and bench area are right on the shore, with spectacular sunsets over the langdales. On my latest stay, my room was spacious and faced the water, with a great view, plenty of charging ports, a sink and a mirror. It was clean and tidy when I arrived. The beds are typical YHA mats, but very comfortable after a long day hiking. There was plenty of parking and I had no trouble finding a space. Staff were friendly and helpful, with information about local hikes, parking and the kitchen. The self-catering kitchen was clean and had plenty of pans and kitchenware. My only issue was some people on the top floor seeming to jump off bunk beds and play music on a speaker until 11pm, right when quiet time starts. I’d have appreciated staff responding more to the difference between ordinary chatter and moving around and turning upstairs into what I can only describe as a bowling alley. It wasn’t their fault, though, and they were very apologetic the next morning.

The location really is fantastic, but I don’t understand all the great reviews. The YHA itself felt tired and wasn’t particularly clean. The car park was so crammed that it was unusable, and registering cost £5 per night. Staff weren’t especially attentive either. Expect a long wait at the bar, since there was only ever one person serving. There were lots of families staying, so kids were running around. I’ve definitely stayed at cleaner, better organised YHAs.

The staff were friendly and the available menu was good, with food that looked lovely. The self-catering kitchen was well equipped too. We stayed two nights for walking and loved the fabulous position beside the lake. Highly recommend.

This was our second midweek visit to this fabulous hostel on the shore of Lake Windermere. We enjoyed the great café bar, lakeside views and sunsets to die for. Tuesday’s quiz night was entertaining, even though we came last, hahaha! The staff were friendly and helpful. It’s a perfect base for walks and boat trips, and regular buses serve it well. Really hope we can return.

For a hostel, I don’t think you can get much better. I don’t understand the negative reviews, since it’s a hostel and expectations shouldn’t be high, but this place exceeds them anyway. The view at this particular YHA is amazing, and sitting by the lake is awesome when the weather is good. Becky was great and very helpful throughout our stay too! da
