The first thing that really worried us was the food. One chicken dish arrived visibly bloody and undercooked; after we sent it back, it was barely better. The calamari was raw too. Several other dishes were wrong or missing items, steaks weren’t cooked as requested, and the chips were hard and unpleasant. Food quality felt rushed and inconsistent for such an expensive menu. We were also told there was no dessert menu because they had “sold out,” which seemed odd with the restaurant so empty. Hot plates carrying very hot food were given straight to children in high chairs without a warning, a serious safety concern. We’d booked a large group meal and pre-ordered, so the restaurant knew what was coming. We were the only customers there, yet service was shockingly poor. The waiters were rude and inattentive, and after dropping off the food no one checked on us. We saw a server again only when they cleared the plates, then they disappeared. Some of us didn’t even get the right utensils, including steak knives for steak or spoons for soup. It was disappointing from start to finish, with poor food and worse service. We wouldn’t return or recommend it.

The garden could be lovely, especially with that climbing frame, but it looked neglected. We’d hoped to sit outside with our two young girls, but the tables were covered in bird poo and the grass was very overgrown. With the weather so nice, it felt like a missed opportunity. Based on all that, I wouldn’t try the food either. If the place is neglected in appearance, I worry the food quality may be similar.

There was a lovely atmosphere on Sunday, with a local choir singing carols and the Overton Mummers performing their historical festive play in amazing costumes. The staff were young and friendly, and the ale was great. I’ve been coming here on and off for years: it’s a charming inn in a lovely spot, with a garden that’s great in good weather and a characterful, tastefully decorated interior. I didn’t eat there this time, in December 2025, though the food has been good on previous visits. It’s very popular for Sunday lunch, and the plates looked good. Definitely worth a try.

We had such a good time here, with warm, homely surroundings and great food. The staff were very welcoming and kept us comfortable, even topping up the fire while we had a few drinks. We stopped for breakfast, went for a nice walk, then came back for lunch. Couldn’t have picked a better place, and I can’t wait to return.
