The calm grounds were lovely to wander around, and the room was clean, comfortable, and well kept. We stayed one night at Appleby Castle, where the old setting and all its character made the visit feel special. Our host was friendly and welcoming, and communication was excellent throughout. We had a relaxing, enjoyable stay and would gladly come back.

The only thing we got wrong was not staying longer. We were shown to a room that had been upgraded to the castle's best suite, and everyone we met was friendly and easy to talk to. There was even piano music in the dining room. The old oak features and original tapestry from the 1600s were stunning, and the castle and grounds made an incredible sight when we arrived. A proper castle stay, and we hope to return. Thanks for the hospitality.

We loved the two nights we spent here, especially the evening meal in the baronial room with a talented, classically trained pianist. The village of Appleby was a pleasure to explore, with walks, independent shops, and medieval architecture, and the surrounding countryside was spectacular. The owner and estate manager were friendly and accommodating, and shared fascinating details about the castle and its history. Our vegetarian meals were very good, though a little pricey, with the offer helping; the sticky toffee pudding was outstanding. Drinks were hotel-standard prices, with a good choice of wine and beer. The Sackville room was comfortable, if quirky. Since it's a Norman castle, the experience mattered more than the small decorative issues.

We booked two nights with breakfast and dinner, and upgraded one night to a room with an amazing roll-top bath. The chef's food was stunning and well worth the price. Sally, the owner, was attentive and full of information, while Peter, the manager, was available whenever we needed help. The castle and grounds were beautiful and very well looked after. Next time, we'll pay extra for the state room or Clifford room. It was a special chance to stay in a 900-year-old castle.

For £14.95 each, we had a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas meal evening in the wonderful setting of a 900-year-old castle. The three-course meal was lovely, and our gluten-free guest was very well catered for. Peter Bass played beautifully on the piano, then gave an interesting, informative talk about the castle and surrounding area. Sally Nightingale, the owner, was a lovely host. Brilliant value, and we'd highly recommend it. Thank you.
