Balloch O'Dee - The Bothy

The Lodge at Balloch O’Dee was comfortable and had everything we needed, including comfy beds. The owners were welcoming and helpful, and the price was very reasonable. We had a fantastic stay.

We only spent one night here, but I could happily have stayed much longer. The views from the lovely bar and kitchen area were great, and it was a nice place to cook and relax. The toilets and showers were spacious and absolutely spotless. Beautiful campsite in a great location. I’d definitely come back.

The showers had plenty of hot water even with lots of people using them, and the basic changing facilities were clean. I brought my own stove and cooked on one of the benches, so I can’t comment on the cooking facilities. The old couches in the shelter didn’t look dirty, and the fire pits around the grounds were handy. Firewood is sold at the main house, which is useful since the nearest shop is 30 minutes away along back roads. Finding a flat place for our tents was difficult. We arrived around 7pm, when lots of tents were already spread across the field, and someone pitched a big tent right beside us at 10 or 11pm. It was just bad timing in the busy summer season, but there aren’t marked lots or spaces, it’s first come, first served. That’s one reason I can’t give it five stars.

It’s about two miles off the main road, so the stay is quiet and peaceful. The owner is friendly, very helpful, and clearly takes pride in keeping the campsite in great shape. There are lots of pitches for tents, motorhomes and camper vans, with fire pits where you can have an open wood fire. Accommodation includes a Yurt, Lodge, Roundhouse, Bothy, and a quirky converted caravan with wooden cladding. The communal kitchen has a ring gas burner, toaster, microwave and freezers. The hot showers are free, and the wire baskets are handy for keeping clothes and towels dry. The toilet block has plenty of space, a sofa in each one, and lots of artwork to look at.
