My god, what a dump. It was full of local drunks, and the place smelled inside and looked visibly shabby. Outside was just a smokers’ paradise, crammed with old sweats.

We paid £80 for one night, and it wasn’t worth it. The pub’s bar and seating area was accessible and quite cosy later at night, but the smell of cooking fat was everywhere, including in the accommodation. The place badly needs renovation and a thorough clean. We didn’t feel we could eat there because of the state of the rooms. It’s a real shame, since this is a historic pub with the potential to be so much more. I wouldn’t recommend it or stay again, and I can’t understand the good reviews.

The beer was great, and the service was friendly. The food looked good, though we didn’t eat this time. They made dogs welcome, and we really appreciated the bowl of water. The back patio was a lovely sun trap.

Winning on the fruit machine brought out some nasty behaviour. A couple of aggressive locals offered to take me outside because I was winning their hard-earned dole money. One of the worst pub experiences I've had in all my years drinking. Avoid it if you don't want that sort of thing. cunchofbunts

The dog wandering around was clearly happiest with belly scratches. Head scratches got a good reception too, while ear scratches were less popular but still went down alright. Back scratches? He wouldn't even get out of bed for those.
