We stopped here overnight on the way home from Cornwall to South Yorkshire. It’s in a lovely village green setting, and we had a brilliant night’s sleep followed by a fabulous full English breakfast. We’d definitely stay here again if we’re nearby.

The food is good and very reasonably priced. I’ve known this pub since 2005, and the landlady has always been quite a character, a bit like Faulty Towers. She doesn’t say much and has no filter. Just go with it and enjoy the humour.

The Sunday roast is lovely. I had turkey, while our friends chose roast beef, and all of it came with the best roast potatoes I’ve tasted, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, plenty of vegetables, and extra gravy. The meat was tasty and tender, and the homemade desserts are to die for. My date pudding with custard was delightful. The dining room was busy for Sunday lunch, but service was still good. This was my second visit to The Green Dragon with local friends. It’s a very old, creaky pub, with black beams and crooked floors, and feels like walking into someone’s home. A proper old English pub in an old English village. Pete cooks and prepares the delicious food himself. The landlady can seem a little brusque, but that’s her way and gives the place its character. So many big pub chains serve the same mediocre food at high prices. This place is individual and reasonably priced, with amazing food. A refreshing find. I’d highly recommend it and will be back.

I popped in for a business meeting and lunch. It’s a historic independent pub, and I think people should support local pubs. They cook the food on site, which is unusual these days, and the portions are good. Worth a try. Just note they don’t stay open all day on weekdays.

We turned up without a booking at 1:45 on a Saturday, hoping to have lunch for three. We were curtly told the kitchen was closed and they couldn’t serve us in any way. That seemed odd when diners were still eating, and closing the kitchen so early on a Saturday is surprising. We found a nearby place to eat that welcomed us. It’s a shame, as we’ve eaten here several times before and the food was good. The place needs new faces and ideas to match the chef’s efforts.
