We paid just £104 for an overnight stay and would happily choose to lounge in the room with a book. It’s a beautifully designed older hotel that feels as if it has evolved over time, rather than being styled to look perfect. I like places with a creative, lived-in feel and can’t stand bland corporate interiors. An older converted building doesn’t need a fresh coat of paint everywhere. The room itself was lovely, very warm, and we had to open the windows. The opaque glass around the loo beside the bed was a bit startling at first, and might feel too intimate in a new relationship. The loo door wouldn’t pull shut and fell slightly open, with a gap in the frame and a hole for pulling it open. That’s my only criticism. The bed was fabulously comfy, and everything was spotless, including the bath in the room, shower and loo. There was a proper tea tray with good biscuits. We enjoyed how lively the hotel was when we came back late, with live music and lots of happy people around. The soundproofing upstairs was great. The boiler was the only noise we noticed, and we stopped noticing it. Breakfast was great, with quick, friendly service and generous portions cooked just right. The breakfast room was full of light, and staff were attentive without getting in the way. Thank you!

There’s plenty of seating inside and out, including a good-sized beer garden with some covered areas. The interior has nice vintage decor, and opening the sash windows brought in a much-needed breeze. Bi-fold doors open up the inside to the garden. There’s parking for up to ten cars and charging points for electric top-ups. A few rooms are available if you fancy a weekend away. It’s in the heart of Bedford, easy to get around, with good walks in the nearby park. The local beer and ale selection is worth trying. You can book a table or just turn up, and the food is high quality. Recommended.

The food was tasty, beautifully presented and good value. Eddy was a lovely host and made us feel welcome. The decor, location and atmosphere are beautiful, and the ambience and presentation are exceptional. Definitely recommend if you’re in Bedford.

Breakfast was freshly cooked and very tasty, and the staff were generally friendly and helpful. We were also lucky enough to get a parking space at the back. The location worked well for visiting friends nearby. We paid for an upgraded room. Its cosy rustic pub style was appealing, but overall it lacked attention to detail and wasn’t particularly clean. Under the bed looked as if it had never been vacuumed, with several cobwebs and a general layer of dust. The bed was comfortable, but the old frame squeaked whenever either of us moved, so we slept poorly. Communication before arrival was poor. We contacted the property twice about our two-night stay and got no reply either time. On the first morning, it wasn’t clear what our room rate included. We weren’t offered a drink at first, then when we asked later, we were told it was included after all. On the final morning, only one staff member was taking orders and serving breakfast, so we waited over 45 minutes.

We all had a fantastic evening celebrating a family birthday. The dishes cover a good range, from traditional favourites to world fusion, and the chorizo Scotch egg was a clear winner. The welcome, service, atmosphere and food were all outstanding. Big thanks to Flo and the kitchen team for making the night. See you again soon!
