There’s room for about 12 cars in the car park, which is useful because this pub is quite remote. It feels like the village hub, and the bar staff and locals were friendly. Just be ready for the mostly single-track roads and few passing places. If reversing isn’t your strong point, you might want to avoid the drive.

We had to delay our stay because of an illness in the family, and the George let us move it straight away without charging extra, even though the cancellation deadline had passed. Really kind service, and a very friendly welcome when we arrived. The room had interesting, quirky decor, a little shabby but nice, and the pub breakfast was the best I’ve ever had. Parking was awkward: the small lot was full, so we left the car on a nearby road and got a less friendly reception from a local resident. That wasn’t the pub’s fault.

The food made for a great lunch. My homemade beef lasagne was generous and one of the nicest I’ve had in ages, with tasty flatbread and a well-dressed side salad. The triple-cooked chips for the table were spot on too. I was glad to see Dartmoor Brewery’s “Jail Ale” on tap, and it was kept perfectly and tasted wonderful. We found the pub through the Good Pub Guide app. It changed hands in December 2023, and the new owners are just about finished with a big refurb. Good luck to them.

We were woken very early by the summer sunrise coming through the curtains, which was a shame after a long day. They let in even the slightest bit of light, so I’ve taken off a star for the lack of blackout curtains. Otherwise, this is a peaceful little b&b with lovely views, gorgeous food and kind staff. The rooms are on the small side, but cosy and nicely decorated.

We tried the weekly curry and a ribeye steak, and both were delicious. The Wicked Wolf gin they serve is worth a try too. Great pub, really good food and lovely people. There’s a small car park, with seating both inside and out. We’ll be back.
