Tudor Rose Original Hotel

We booked two nights for my family, in a double room, Room 1, and a triple, Room 10. We didn’t expect much for the low price, but I’ve stayed in cleaner, better kept hostels. From a distance, the rooms looked dated but passable. Up close, both were filthy and nothing like the online photos. There was no fridge, no white bedding like the pictures showed, everything was very old, and the walls were paper thin. The owner said the photos hadn’t been updated, even though he’d been running the place for over a year. Room 1 had short black hairs all over the mattress, though none of us have short dark hair. The bathroom mirror was covered in toothpaste and spit, the TV remote had food crumbs, and the floor was dirty. There were spill marks on the little heater and dust on the windows, sills, lampshades, table and kettle. No toilet paper or bath mat, and the tiny shower was covered in mould. Room 10 smelled strongly of smoke, barely had space for a double bed, let alone a double and single, had broken drawers and dirty mugs, and the wallpaper was coming off the wall. I raised all of this with the owner after check-in. He said he’d been in a rush and had “missed a few things” while cleaning. The next morning there was a very strong smell of weed. We had two young children with us, already dealing with the dust and smoke smell in the room, and then this as well. We’d booked two nights, but checked out on day two. It’s a real shame because the location was great, but the hotel completely let us down.

My mum Christine and I had a lovely stay last Tuesday. It felt like home, and nothing was too much trouble. Sorry this review is late. We had a lovely time and are coming back next week, though we don’t know which day yet. We’ll get in touch. Thanks, Christine and Joanne.

Rob and Sara are so friendly. There’s a pool table in the lounge, which was a treat, and handy supplies like tea, coffee, sugar, milk and toilet roll at the bottom of the stairs. I’ll always stay here when I’m in South shore.

It was a noisy, grim stay. Yes, the night was very cheap, but cleaning takes little effort and costs next to nothing. The bathroom was so dirty I didn’t shower and waited until I got home.
