The kitchen deserves all the praise, especially the steak, which was the best I’ve had in the UK. The duck is worth trying too, as is anything from the desert menu. The staff were amazing, the place was super clean, and the location is breathtaking. Forget London fine dining and come here instead. Absolutely fantastic food. I’d go back, and I will.

The pie of the day was lamb, packed with meat in short crust pastry, and amazing. I could have used a little more gravy. We also had the White Horse burger, plus asparagus and white bait to start. The white bait and squid were cooked just how I like them, so I really enjoyed them. A wonderful meal, and I’ll tell friends and family. We found the White Horse at Compton Bassett while looking for a pub open on a bank holiday. I booked just in case, which was extremely easy and secured a table for the two of us. I got the last parking space when we arrived. We sat in a nice spot and ordered drinks. The pub seems to have plenty of other facilities, including a banquet hall, a pleasant garden with tables and seating, and rooms.

The cheddar and ham hock terrine was a rich, rustic starter, bursting with flavour. Sian’s lamb rump was juicy, full of flavour and beautifully presented. But the steak pie was the standout for me, with generous chunks of tender meat, fresh ingredients and buttery mash. It’s the best I’ve ever had, proper comfort food. 🌿🍴🥧🥔🧀🥓 The White Horse is a real gem of a gastro pub restaurant and inn, tucked away in the beautiful Compton Bassett countryside. The restaurant’s food is a solid two AA Rosette standard, and we had an unforgettable meal. If you're anywhere near Wiltshire, it’s well worth the detour.

We had olives and bread for £9 as nibbles to start, then Roast Beef Sunday Lunch. The roast was £20, with extra Roast Pots at £5, and fish and chips were £19. Good food in a pretty village setting. One of the better places to eat in the area, and we had a good experience.

The seafood starter was amazing, and the burger was one of the best I’ve had in a while. The food was excellent, and I’d highly recommend it. It’s a great pub with really nice food. I was told I could sit anywhere, then asked to move because two of us were at a four-person table. I understand the reason, but it was a Tuesday night and only one other couple was eating. Come on, let me pick my own seat.
