Crossroads House

It's easy to get to from the M6, and access should be even easier once the major roadworks are finished. This friendly, family-run B&B has clean, comfortable, nicely presented rooms and a fabulous breakfast. There are no evening meals on site, but The Greyhound Pub nearby is well worth a visit. You can also order a takeaway and eat it in the dining room. Highly recommended.

The hostess couldn't have been kinder or more helpful, and there were great breakfast choices to get us on our way. The rooms were comfortable and clean, my two small dogs were welcome, and there was proper milk in a fridge for tea in the room. My only concern was a strong drains smell in my perfectly clean single room, which I hope was temporary.

We booked three rooms, a single, a king-size and a family room, each with an en-suite shower. It was our first stay, and we're going back next week. A nice surprise was the guest lounge. Just off M6 junction 42 in Carlisle, it's a handy place to break up the drive from the south to the top of Scotland, and better value than Premier Inn. Breakfast the next day was a good start.

I've stayed twice with Julie and the team. It was a very difficult time, as Mum was terminally ill and then passed away, and having a place to stay where they understood my situation made such a difference. Julie was amazing, the dogs were gorgeous, and they made us feel so welcome. When our dinner booking fell through one night, we went to the Greyhound and had a lovely meal, perfect for my Dad. I'm delighted they're now doing breakfasts too, so I may be able to persuade Dad to come out and meet the team.
