We paid £157 for two people for one night, including dinner, bed and breakfast, and it was a bargain. The hotel is about 25 minutes from the ferry terminals on Kintyre. We’ll be back, and do visit. My wife and I loved the warm welcome, comfortable bed and spotless room. We had dinner, bed and breakfast, and I can’t remember enjoying hotel meals more. The owners know and love the area, and specialise in local ingredients. Some of Alyson’s simple things, like shortbread and potato scones, were the best I’ve tasted anywhere. Dinner was scallops, mussels, lamb and seafood skewers. My wife is coeliac, which we’d mentioned before arriving, and they took care of everything, including making sure there was no ordinary bread on her plate. That attention to detail was fantastic. Alan was friendly and attentive out front. The wine list was small but excellent, with very reasonable prices.

We were disappointed we’d only booked two nights. Dunvallanree is a hidden gem, and I’ve been longing to go back ever since we left. The small family-run hotel feels like a perfect escape. Its visitors’ book in the lounge goes back to the 1940s, and I couldn’t find a single disappointed review. We followed the Seafood Trail on our two-week tour of Scotland, which brought us to Dunvallanree after a five-hour drive. It’s right at the end of the road, overlooking a bay with white sand and turquoise water. It was raining hard when we arrived, but the setting was still stunning, and the garden was in full bloom with tropical-looking plants and flowers. We stayed for two nights, four adults and three children, and the food was what had drawn us there. Alyson and Alan were amazing hosts. The food was the best we’d ever tasted, beautifully presented, cooked to perfection and served in generous portions. We couldn’t bear to leave anything on our plates. Breakfast was especially delicious, with eggs from the hens out back, the brightest orange yolks, freshly juiced oranges and enough to keep you going until dinner. The beds were the most comfortable we’d ever slept in, with luxurious feather pillows and duvet, and the rooms were immaculate. Homemade shortbread each day was another little treat. We had the hotel, beach and bay to ourselves. I brought my American husband to Scotland for the first time and am so glad we chose Dunvallanree. I wanted him to experience Scottish food at its best, and Alyson absolutely delivered.

The service was excellent, and the wait staff were pleasant and happy to help. The food was high quality, though service wasn’t the fastest.
