Spire View at THE GALLEON STEAKHOUSE

We had a terrible stay on Valentines night. The bed was poor quality and not fit for purpose. Sitting or lying on it, we could feel the base underneath. Management handled our complaint very badly and left us to find another hotel and restaurant at 2045 pm. We were also told breakfast was left out on the hall landing for guests to help themselves, but nobody mentioned that until we arrived. There was nowhere to sit, so we had to take it back to our room. That wasn’t the service we expected. I can’t recommend this place. Be aware. I’ll try to post the video already sent to the director Mathew. His response made me feel the truth was unwelcome. The video shows the poor quality bed.

I was worried when I realised check-in closed at 9 pm, since my train wasn’t due in until after 10. Michelle messaged me around 9 and kindly helped arrange things, so I was able to get in smoothly even arriving late. As a foreign student travelling here, I really appreciated her patience and understanding. The hotel itself is lovely too, and I’m looking forward to a good night’s sleep and seeing Chesterfield tomorrow. Many thanks to Michelle for her help tonight!

Sleep depended a lot on how considerate the other guests were. On some nights we slept badly because people used the communal area late at night and early in the morning, and one night someone made hot drinks at 2.30am. I’d suggest a rule against using it between 10pm and 8am. If that were introduced and worked, I’d rate the place 5*. Having breakfast outside the rooms was convenient. The rooms were comfortable and, with the road nearby, surprisingly quiet when the windows were shut, though that made them hotter. Staff were very friendly, the location is handy for restaurants and an 8 minute walk from the train station, and the attached Galleon serves lovely food.

The food was fantastic, especially the terrific steaks, and the owners were lovely. We had a great room, a comfy bed and a good shower. I’ll stay again and definitely have dinner there too.
