The Allerdale Court Hotel

That was the worst night's sleep I've ever had in a hotel. The mattress was rock hard and sagged, and the thin duvets didn't keep the room warm overnight. I usually run hot, but I had to get dressed and climb back into bed to stay warm. I won't stay again.

Friendly staff, and good value for money. My top-floor room was clean and warm, with plenty of hot water and a nice corner bath.

There were spiders and a bug infestation in the top corner of room 208, even though the room had seemed tidy and the beds were comfortable. We asked Tracey to come remove them. We found her outside drinking and smoking while at work. She said she'd be up in five minutes, but after 20 minutes she was still outside. When she eventually came up, she was extremely rude and accused us of putting a hand towel in the bin. At 4AM, we woke to a message from her threatening police action, though we had done nothing wrong. In the morning we tried to check out, only to find she hadn't arrived at work, so we were stuck there for a few more hours. From the moment we arrived, Tracey had seemed passive-aggressive and deliberately rude. The low arch at the start of the room was a safety hazard, and the food was overpriced with hardly anything available in the bar. Terrible stay, and I'll never come back.

The food from bloc was delicious, and the portions were huge. The staff were fab, really friendly and attentive, and got us a heater when our room was too cold for me. I understand the building is over 300 years old, but it was still chilly. We had a good stay with our dog, and it's close enough for exploring the Lake District.
