The chilli fries were great for sharing, and my sausage sandwich was excellent, made with sausages from a local butcher, plenty of well cooked onions, and the same homemade bread sold in the village shop section of the pub. The barman was friendly and made sure we were comfortable without making a fuss. We'd had a rotten morning after my wife hit a pothole on her way to work and burst a tyre, leaving her stuck on a busy road. After calls to the RAC and a local garage, the car was recovered to a garage in Cocking, just opposite The Blue Bell. Two hours later it was in their yard with a replacement tyre on the way, but they couldn't say when it would be ready, so they suggested leaving it overnight. I was sent to pick my wife up. By lunchtime we were outside a pub, so going in seemed the obvious thing to do. About half an hour after leaving home, I was sitting across from her with a menu, which was a welcome change to the morning. We kept lunch light with two sandwiches, lemonade and chilli fries to share. The pub is a real gem. Most tables were taken by smartly dressed local women having lunch and a chat. It feels like a community hub, where people know each other and take their time. The food turned a miserable morning into a lovely little lunch date. If you're passing through Cocking, The Blue Bell is worth a stop.

The food each evening was wonderful, especially the pastry dishes on Thursday. My colleague and I enjoyed our stay at the Blue Bell. Our rooms were comfortable, had everything we needed, and were more than adequate. The location worked perfectly for our work around West Dean/Cocking.

Good spot to meet between Chichester and Midhurst, with ample parking. I had a tasty lunch and the service was both friendly and efficient. I'm looking forward to booking for a Sunday roast.

The owner had thought of so many things that make a walker's stay easier: home cooked meals, pack lunches, fresh baked goods made to order, and a tuck shop for restocking. The rooms were comfortable too. We especially enjoyed the balmore chicken and sticky toffee pudding. My dad and I are walking the SDW, and The Blue Bell was the best stay of our trip by far, even though we'd already stayed in some lovely places. After a long walk, we were welcomed by a friendly and accommodating owner. We had a great stay. I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone visiting the area, especially tired walkers.

The halloumi burger was the best I've ever had, and the portions were huge, just right after a big hike. The prices were fair, there were lots of veggie choices on the menu, and the vegetarian food was made with care. The staff were so kind and lovely, and very dog friendly.
