The walks are the best part, with routes up the Old Man and around Coniston, plus maps available at the hostel. Ambleside and Grasmere are easy to get to as well. We came back ten years after doing NCS here with a group of friends, and found everything just as we remembered it. It’s a rural, rough-and-ready walkers’ hostel, so the rooms are what you’d expect for £13.25 a night between four of us. The hot breakfast felt a little small for the price, though there’s complementary fruit and toast to fill up on.

Nothing about the stay satisfied me. I was disappointed, especially considering what I paid. In September I paid £40 a night for a female dorm, with no breakfast or towel. I later found out I’d received a discount, but the cost was still £32 per night. I booked through the official website and definitely stayed in a dorm at Coniston Holly How. Maybe it was an 8-person room rather than a 10-person one, but I know I paid £40 and can show the confirmation email. Sandra isn’t my real name, so of course you won’t find my booking under that name. I have no reason to lie.

The self-catering kitchen was excellent, and the staff were really friendly and welcoming. It was our first time staying in a landpod, and we had a brilliant time.

I only managed one night at YHA Coniston, Holly How instead of the two I’d planned, but it turned out to be a wonderful stay. The place felt cozy and welcoming, and both the guests and staff made me feel at home. The staff were kind, friendly, and always happy to help. When I missed my bus, a lady with red/golden hair went out of her way to help me find and book another hostel. I’m really grateful, as I would’ve been in real trouble without her. It was a memorable, super experience, and I’d love to come back. A solid 10 out of 10! 🤗💌

The property was fairly clean, but tired and outdated, and that didn’t make up for the poor service. I wouldn’t stay here again. I arrived around 8pm with a Booking.com reservation and realised I’d booked the wrong date, two weeks later. I explained straight away and asked to move it to the correct date, which would have brought the booking forward rather than cancelled it. Reception showed no flexibility and, more frustratingly, no empathy. They charged me for the whole room rather than the bed, which other reviews suggest happens often. They also said the name on the reservation couldn’t be changed, so I couldn’t transfer it to anyone else. Since I’ll be abroad on the booked dates, the reservation is unusable and a complete waste.
