The Butterleigh Inn

The rooms were warm, clean and modern, with the usual extras like tea, coffee and shower gel. Staff were polite and friendly. The shower was satisfying, but very noisy and looked very old in an otherwise modern bathroom. The makeshift step, built from bricks and bits, was odd. Dinner was edible, but not the quality I expected from the reviews. Maybe those reviewers have different ideas of nice food, or perhaps the chef has gone downhill. It filled me up, and that’s about all I can say. Breakfast was a travesty. Another guest and I waited for someone to take our breakfast order, only to discover it was continental only. That continental breakfast was rubbish: shriveled grapes, a few yogurts, a handful of tiny pastries and cereal. There was no cooked option, and at £7:50 it felt like a rip-off. I was so disappointed. I just had coffee and started my day hungry. It clearly wasn’t made clear to guests, which isn’t on. What if I don’t want a sugary dessert breakfast? I think I heard the other guest ask for a refund or at least complain. I didn’t bother. I know places like this are struggling these days, and I’m leaving this review in the hope things improve and the business prospers, not to punish them for a subpar experience. I don’t think I’d come again. EDIT: An unprofessional, mardy, impotent reply to an honest review is truly a sign of a thriving, successful business 🤣 I’ve added a picture of the grapes because I suspected they might get the hump and try to lie. A lovely pub with a great menu, a good wine list and a very inventive chef. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and dogs are made especially welcome.

We had a great dinner at the Butterleigh with our oldest friends last night. The pub was full, but service was still good. Our friends loved the atmosphere, just what you want from a country pub.

The staff were so friendly and helpful, the food was delicious, and our room was comfortable, quiet and clean. There’s plenty of parking, and it’s a great place to bring dogs, with lovely walks right on the doorstep. The setting is stunning, with beautiful Devon countryside views. We had a lovely long weekend at The Butterleigh Inn, which is a great base for exploring from moorland to coast. We’ll definitely return, and stay longer.
