The food was good, but the service felt glum and careless. We’d visited years ago and loved it, but it’s changed for the worse. We had to ask specifically for the set lunch menus, and there was no warm welcome. Neither server smiled during the meal. After we ordered, we were told a starter wasn’t available. Diners should be told about unavailable dishes before ordering. My wine, meant to go with the main course, arrived only after I reminded them a second time, just as I was finishing. It was put down without an apology. We skipped pudding and coffee, and regretted paying the 12.5% service charge. Hope & Lane across the road was much friendlier and more welcoming.

Every dish looked gorgeous, and the olive oil cake dessert with black pepper ice cream was a real standout. We had an incredible dinner last night, with impeccable food and excellent, friendly service from our charming waiter Nick. Can’t wait to come back!

The rooms look nicely designed, but the walls are very thin, even for a B&B. Breakfast was decent, though the dinner menu felt overpriced for the quality. Le Pinardier across the road would have made for a nicer evening. I’d wanted to visit for years, so it was a shame that the welcome and evening service came across as a little cold and judgmental. My expectations weren’t met.

It’s a great pub at heart, and clearly popular with people who love it. I just get the feeling the staff have lost some of the charm that first brought people in. Remember to be nice.

We waited ages for service and had to keep going to the bar to get someone’s attention. The portions were tiny, and the only vegetarian option was like a little wedding starter. Poor value for money and not worth the price.
