We stayed two nights while attending a funeral. The village is lovely, and the pub and restaurant area is fine, but don't stay here. We were told only budget rooms were available and there was no hot breakfast, but the room was dreadful. The bed base was collapsing, and the furniture belonged in a skip. The shower was barely a trickle. The cleaner just threw the duvet over the bed and didn't replace the milk. There was no bath mat, and a missing seal on one shower door let water onto the floor. I used a hand towel to stand on, and it was left on the floor. Breakfast was abysmal. There was a fine cereal choice, but the cheapest bread was still in its plastic bag, with a big tub of Co Op spread for everyone to dig into, shared jam jars, UHT milk cartons and a jar of Nescafé. That was it, all self-service with no presentation. They don't care about paying guests. Yes, it's cheap, but awful. Worst of all, the gym next to our room, inside the building, blasted rave music all night until 9am on our second night. There was nobody around, and we didn't get a wink of sleep. Beyond dreadful.

The garlic bread with cheese was the only tasty thing we had. The homemade lasagne was listed on the menu but unavailable, so I ordered the garlic bread instead. My olives, garlic and feta dish had neither garlic nor feta. The garlic mushrooms were the real disaster, just mushrooms in some oily, gravy-like sludge, with no taste and no garlic. My husband's ribs tasted like cheap supermarket ribs, dry and lacking both flavour and meat. The food on the floor under our table didn't help. Our first dinner here was absolutely awful, and it'll definitely be our last.

First time here, and we'll definitely come again. A great pub lunch, tasty and generous. Two of us had steak and ale pie with chips and peas, one with fresh peas and one with mushy peas. We also had garlic mushrooms with garlic bread, piri piri garlic prawns with garlic bread, and four teas.

We hadn't planned to eat here, but came in for Sunday lunch because other family members were going. All three of us loved the Sunday beef roast. There was plenty of perfectly cooked beef, and the vegetables were nicely presented. A roast parsnip tucked under the layers of beef was a lovely surprise. Friendly staff and a really nice atmosphere inside. I wish it were closer so we could pop in more often. I'd recommend the food and drink, but can't comment on the rooms since we weren't staying overnight.

It's a proper old place, down to earth and a little dated around the edges, which is just my sort of place. We stayed one night after a wake across the road, so the location worked perfectly. The staff were lovely. Leslie and Annabel cooked and served breakfast, and were especially friendly. They went out of their way to make things work for two fussy children in our party. Our standard double room was basic and a bit dated, but comfortable and clean. It needed a little maintenance here and there. There are lots of rooms around a central courtyard, and even though ours was above the bar, it was very quiet. We had a comfortable stay and would book again if we're ever in Epworth.
