Radisson BLU Hotel Durham

We came back after spending our wedding night here several years ago and were very impressed by the facilities. The staff were polite and really attentive, and the view from our room was spectacular.

Getting around was easy, with transport and nearby sights close by, and the view was lovely too. We had plenty of room and slept comfortably, while the staff were helpful throughout. It was a pleasant stay, and I’d happily come back.

The spa was spotless and well worth using, especially the relaxing saunas. The pool still had people in it around 7-8pm, but it wasn't too crowded to swim a few laps. The jacuzzi has a 15 minute limit, so you can wait for a turn to enjoy it on your own. Breakfast had enough variety for me to put together several different things, even if the choice wasn't huge. I loved the fluffy scrambled eggs, rich beans, and the ingredients for a cheese and fruit plate or yogurt bowl. My partner was less impressed. I did spot a hair on the pineapple, though, and that was harder to excuse than the one by the shower. We slept incredibly well during our two nights. That king size memory foam bed felt luxurious, just what I needed after walking about 17,000 steps in a day. The shower was small but easy to use, with good pressure and a relaxing feel. I found a very long hair hanging by the shower head, which bothered me a bit. I’m giving the cleaner the benefit of the doubt and assuming they had a bad day. The hotel felt luxurious and I was relaxed the whole time. Staff were kind and friendly, and I never felt unwelcome. There was a real mix of guests, from business people and posh folk to 'the lads' and me, an alternative young adult. Its spot by the riverside walk, with lots of bars, restaurants and places to visit, was handy. I’d recommend it, especially if they get better at spotting stray hairs. I liked being welcomed with a refillable water jug, even though it wouldn't fit ice from the machine. We just used the glasses instead. There were also plenty of reasonably priced amenities.

The staff were friendly, professional and really helpful, and the hotel was quiet, clean and close to the city centre. Those were the best parts of the stay. I found the spa disappointing. The pool and the pool area were both cold, and the sauna wasn't working, so it didn't feel relaxing. Breakfast cost £29 per person, which seemed far too much for what was on offer. For a hotel at this price and standard, the value overall wasn't good, and I wouldn't be in a hurry to return. There was no fridge in the room, and the hairdryer didn't work properly. In Room 126, the TV wouldn't let me stream or mirror my phone, which feels outdated. One of the supposedly clean bath towels had fake eyelashes stuck to it. That was unpleasant and made me question the housekeeping. The location and staff were excellent, but the facilities and value fell short. I expected much better for the price.
