16 Pilrig Guest House

We paid a significant amount for two nights at 16 Pilrig, and the stay was very disappointing. The room was so small that three people standing in it felt cramped. It seemed to be a top-floor loft or attic room, which added to the discomfort. There was no lift or staff to help with luggage, so we had to haul heavy suitcases up very steep stairs, especially hard while travelling with a child. The room had no proper windows, only a tiny roof window in the ceiling, and felt suffocating at night. We asked for a fan, but staff said they didn't have one. With a child, the poor ventilation made the stay uncomfortable and stressful. The bathroom was outside the room, which was inconvenient and uncomfortable, especially for women travelling with a child, and this arrangement hadn't been mentioned when booking. We weren't given clear information beforehand about room size, floor, stairs, ventilation or the bathroom setup. That lack of transparency is unacceptable. Service was just as disappointing: staff weren't cooperative or considerate. At checkout they refused even a one-hour extension and immediately brought up extra charges. Other places we've stayed have been flexible, but here things felt rigid and money-focused. They also charged £5 to store our bags for a few hours after checkout, despite our two-night stay. It's the attitude toward guests, not the amount, that bothered us. The stay felt overpriced, inconvenient and poorly managed. Despite other rooms being available, we got one of the smallest and least comfortable options. I wouldn't recommend this property, especially to families. If minus stars were possible, I'd give them.

The location was excellent, and I chose this place because it was the most affordable option at the time. My room was very clean and had a pleasant view. Parking is limited, though there is free street parking at night, which made it manageable.

We had a really enjoyable stay. The room was clean, with a hot mini bar, safe tap water and a bathroom that was small but adequate. The centre is within walking distance, and so is Leith.

The room was comfortable, cosy and very clean, and I'd happily stay here again if I return to Edinburgh. Highly recommend.
