Victoria Street is a stop in its own right, not just somewhere to walk through. Even with plenty of tourists, it keeps a real Old Town feel alongside a lively, creative modern side. The curved cobbled street rises up the hill between distinctive buildings, with colourful shopfronts, quirky boutiques, and cosy cafés. It has a playful, almost cinematic atmosphere, especially when the light catches the facades or the street glows at night. People often say it inspired Diagon Alley in Harry Potter, and it's easy to see the resemblance. A lovely mix of history, colour, and character.
It's easy to reach from the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle, and you'll likely pass through while exploring the Old Town. This short, curved stretch is packed with colourful old stone buildings, independent shops, cafés, and little boutiques. Take your time looking around or stop for coffee, and enjoy the street from a few different angles. It's very photogenic, which also means it gets busy with tourists during the day.
If you're visiting Victoria Street for the Harry Potter connection, it's worth a look, though it's a quick walk if you aren't planning to shop. It's often crowded, and tour groups can suddenly mob the shops, so try to get there before them. The street is short and has plenty of photo spots. Museum Context often has a 30-40 minute queue, and in my view the shop isn't worth the wait since there's nothing special inside that you can't find elsewhere. Across the street, The Enchanted Galaxy is a better Harry Potter shop and you can often walk straight in. The Knights Vault sells swords and other things. Nearby, The Elephant House coffee shop, where J.K. Rowling wrote some of the books, has reopened. Greyfriars Kirk, where you can find Tom Riddles grave, is a short walk away. Victoria Street is said to have inspired Diagon Alley and is described as Scotland's most photographed street.
In Edinburgh's Old Town, Victoria Street is a curved, cobbled street with colourful buildings and distinctive shops. Its history and scenic look make it a famous part of the city's UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tourists flock there to take photographs.
The street can be crowded, but its colourful, lively feel and unusual beauty make it a stop I'd make sure to include. Rows of historic shops follow the winding cobbled route up a steep hill, in curved buildings full of character. Victoria Street is often said to have inspired Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. It brings together so much of Edinburgh's history and creativity, and feels like a particularly vivid slice of the city.
