Mercure Edinburgh Haymarket

The breakfast was generous, the beds comfortable and the bathroom spacious. It’s also well placed for public transport and the airport shuttle. The price felt a little high, though it matches local rates. Service was so good that even if circumstances kept you from leaving the hotel, you’d still have an enviable stay.

The rooms aren’t huge, but two of them worked fine for three people and lots of luggage over a two-night stay. Both were warm, clean and serviced, with a coffee machine and pods, complimentary water and shortbread. Staff were attentive, and the buffet breakfast had plenty to eat, including a fun pancake maker. Booking breakfast in advance made it cheaper. The location is close enough to walk around easily, but far enough from the main road to avoid the public noise. I’ve read some reviews and honestly can’t relate to them.

We slept brilliantly in the quiet location, and the bed was comfortable with plenty of hot water. Our room had everything working, plus a hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities and a minibar. There was also a fan heater, which we didn’t need. The staff were fantastic throughout, helpful, well informed and gently funny. Their personal touch made this small hotel feel like a boutique place. Mercure should sort out the infrastructure for guests who need it; the people working here deserve a hotel where every room is like the one we had.

The bus stop is only a few steps away, and the city centre isn’t far. Breakfast was very good, too. What we’ll miss most is our best friend Sonja at reception. Everyone on staff was so friendly, helpful and personal.
