I really enjoyed my stay and would definitely come back. Neil and Moyra were kind and helpful, and although I felt safe, the streets around the guest house weren’t very well lit at night. Edinburgh overall is quite bright, but that area is dimmer, something to keep in mind if you’re travelling alone. I stayed three nights in a single room. The furnishings are a bit old, so take note if you’re sensitive to cleanliness or have OCD, though the room and en-suite were generally clean. The city centre is about a 30 minute walk, or you can take a bus from a stop around 7 minutes away. There are nice cafés nearby, and supermarkets about 10-15 minutes away.

The guest house is on two bus routes into the city and close to the Braid Hills, with their great views over the city. The Braids really are a gem. I used my folding bike to explore Edinburgh and Midlothian, and they let me store it there. I had a warm single room with nice decor and all the usual amenities. The private bathroom was across the hall. There’s no breakfast, which suited me fine, as there are plenty of places to eat within walking distance.

I stayed for 5 weeks, and Neil and Moira made every day pleasant. They’re a warm, friendly couple and were flexible about the arrangements I requested. Thanks to both of them for the hospitality. I’d stay again without a second thought if I get the chance. The neighbourhood is quiet and peaceful, with at least four bus stops nearby. The city centre isn’t far if you fancy a walk, and there are lots of restaurants along the way. Within a minute’s walk, I also found dine-in and takeaway restaurants, a pharmacy, grocery stores, a barber shop and a beauty salon.

Neil was a great help planning my trips and knew all sorts of Scottish things to chat about. I love dogs, so I’ll definitely come back! The welcome was really warm, the room was nice and everything was clean. Breakfast was delicious, with toast, jam and fruit, and the best tea I’ve ever had.

The door locks were my one real concern. They only let the door fall shut, so I didn’t feel great about leaving valuables in the room. I took them with me anyway, so it wasn’t a big deal. The room was a little small too, but that was fine for me as an explorer. I needed somewhere to stay for a scientific conference at Edinburgh University, and ended up at Smith's Guest House. Neil, the landlord, was a friendly Scotsman who clearly loved running the place and lived in the basement. My room was on the top floor, the 2nd. With sloped walls and my height of 195 cm, I nearly hit my head a few times, but it’s manageable if you remember each day. It had everything I needed: a private bathroom with shower, TV, bed, desk, cupboard and chair. A fridge would have been nice, though there’s a convenience store directly opposite the entrance. The room was tidy and cleaned daily, and free tea with sugar, milk and the rest was provided. There’s no breakfast, which didn’t bother me since I like trying different places, and there’s the store too. It’s on a quiet street, with a bus stop nearby and pubs and the university within walking distance. The price was reasonable and the landlords were nice, so it could be worth a try if you need a room in Edinburgh. Thanks again to Neil and Moira for having us!
