The Bridge House is handy for the city centre and Edinburgh Universities' central campus, with plenty of places to eat and shops nearby. The Union Canal is just around the corner for a scenic walk, run or cycle. The kitchen has enough room for a few people to cook and eat at once. Bedrooms are modern, with a sink and generous desk space, and six people share two bathrooms. There are study spaces for different needs in the communal area, plus a couple of lounges for games with friends. Regular social events help create a sense of belonging. It’s a nice student accommodation, though a pool table or similar would give people more ways to unwind and socialise.

The study areas were a pleasant break from a room that was all one shade of white and felt more like a cell than a bedroom. The accommodation quality was subpar for the extortionate prices, and a load of laundry cost £7.

I appreciate having reception available 24/7 and maintenance issues in the flat being fixed quickly. The heating problem, though, was never resolved, and winter here was quite cold.

The stove is awful and keeps turning itself off. Next to the primary school playground, with kids screaming and windows that are useless, it’s impossible to sleep.

The laundry setup was a real problem. Access depended on an app and a verification code sent to my phone, but with our EU SIM card we couldn't receive it. We ended up paying £20 to have the laundry done. The room smelled strange and the odor wouldn't go away, so we kept the window open. Since we were on the ground floor beside the entrance, we heard people coming and going, and smoke and vape fumes drifted into the room. Doors also banged and slammed constantly, with nothing to soften the noise. I knew we'd booked a dorm room and was fine with that. One staff member did try to help with the smell by bringing air fresheners. They didn't work, but I appreciated the effort, so two stars rather than one.
