Today, only the west gate on Dock Street remains to show the scale of Monck's Citadel in North Leith. The old fort covered the area from Dock Street through Coburg Street and Cooper Street, then followed the line of the 1560 fortifications to what is now Commercial Street. It was a large, pentagonal structure faced with hewn stone, with five bastions, barracks, magazines and store buildings, plus houses for the governor and officers. Building it meant Monck demolished the Old Hospice, the church of St Nicholas, and the North Leith Parish Church burial ground at St Ninians. He almost certainly reused stone from the Old Hospice for the Citadel.
