The hotel’s look was a real highlight: the artwork, stained glass on the landing, chandeliers, and the general atmosphere were all lovely. We arrived about four hours before check-in and could leave our luggage for £5. Since we came by train to Exeter Central, being directly across from the station was perfect. The staff were friendly and accommodating, our room was clean and had everything we needed, and it was quiet enough for a good rest. A few things made the stay less comfortable. The lifts were out of order, and some elderly guests had to carry heavy bags upstairs without help. Our requested double was changed to a king, but it was two singles pushed together with only a sheet and mattress protector. The join was uneven and uncomfortable to lie across. The bathroom floor was raised about an inch, and I stubbed my toe painfully before noticing. All the room lights ran from the main switch by the door, so they were either too bright or not bright enough. The little pen-like bedside lights were the only ones that worked separately. We were on the second floor and the view wasn’t great, though the cathedral in the morning mist looked lovely. The walls were thin, so we heard the neighbours’ TV and conversation, as well as doors banging. They were quiet at night, but people yelling and hollering below made it awkward to open the window for ventilation.

The location was very convenient, and the staff checked that we were managing the stairs since the lifts weren’t working. For the price, the room was decent, though the double bed was two singles pushed together and there were a couple of small mould spots in the bathroom.

The Victorian building has a funky feel, and the rooms were clean. It’s central and easy to find, but the parking charge wasn’t clear on booking.com or in the information receipt. Also, I can’t figure out why there’s a huge picture of a ball of wool on the wall.

We booked for one night before seeing a concert at The Phoenix. The hotel was pleasant, the room clean, and it had all the amenities we needed. Reception staff were lovely. Being right beside Exeter Central train station was handy, though Saturday night brought some noise, which comes with the location. You can ask for a quieter room. We had a very nice stay, thank you.

I’d happily return to the Rougemont Sunday hotel in Exeter Central. My three-day, two-night solo stay was wonderful, and I booked three weeks ahead for £140. For a 4-star hotel, it felt like excellent value, with service that went above and beyond. I was in Room 310, which was spacious, spotless, and comfortable, including the shower and toilet area. Housekeeping tidied and replaced the towels every day. There’s a lift, too. I asked for a nice view and Kara and Jess kindly made that happen. They were brilliant at check-in, and the reception team as a whole was friendly and accommodating. Thanks to them and everyone at the Rougemont for the warm, professional welcome. The hotel is just across from Exeter Central Station, so arriving by train or bus is easy. Tourist spots, restaurants, and the main shopping area are all within a five-minute walk. As a solo traveller, I felt very safe in the area at any hour. A couple of small things: there wasn’t a dressing gown, and the shower had body wash and shampoo but no conditioner or lotion. I didn’t buy the buffet breakfast, as I don’t usually eat breakfast, though it was available onsite. I loved the hotel and highly recommend it for a visit to Exeter.
