I liked how this simple clock adds character to the lively centre of Exeter. It’s right among the historic buildings, and makes an easy place to meet. A charming landmark.

Miles' Clocktower has been a useful meeting spot and a landmark for directions at the top of Queen Street for years. Mrs Louisa A Miles had it built in 1897 in memory of her husband, who died in 1881 aged 81. Its four illuminated clock faces are each 4ft 6in (135 cm) across. A large plaque on one side records its dedication. The other sides have the text from the Book of Proverbs, the Miles' coat of arms, and a door into the tower. The plaque reads: Erected in the sixty first year of the glorious reign of Victoria Empress Queen To perpetuate the beneficent work of William Miles Esq of this city on behalf of the animal creation by his widow 1897 Sources: The Ironmonger 18 Feb 1899, Express and Echo and Flying Post.

With its four faces out of sync, this great tower clock shows the correct time twice on each face, adding up to eight times a day. 5/5.

A brilliant clock. Properly clock-like!

An old tower with a cool look, and it even keeps time!
