The setting is lovely and rural, around 10 minutes from Haddington, and the place has been renovated beautifully, with a nice beer garden. We were welcomed warmly at the restaurant and our order and drinks arrived, but then we never saw the waitress again. We had to go to the bar to pay, without anyone asking if we wanted dessert or another drink. My steak pie was a small individual shortcrust one with a thin, flaky top. There was only a little yellowish mash, raw carrots, and one perfectly cooked asparagus spear. My husband had fish and chips. The fish looked anaemic, though he said it tasted okay. I'm afraid it's not for me.

The staff were very friendly and the service was very good. The location is nice too, but the food let it down. Some dishes were unavailable, and there wasn't much choice for children. The haggis and lamb liver were good, but the steak was overdone and its extra-cost peppercorn sauce tasted artificial, definitely not homemade. The chicken Cajun pasta was far too spicy. This could be a really cool place with better food.

The outside area was really pleasant, and although there’s no parking on site, we found it easy to park nearby. We enjoyed the restaurant, and the menu had a very good choice. It was quiet when we visited, with just one other couple dining. I also liked being able to order smaller portions of some meals.

The owners and staff were so friendly and helpful, and the place feels cozy, with nice decor, a fireplace inside, and a garden outside. We had a lovely meal today. The mackerel pâté was superb to start, and the liver, bacon and onion casserole was delicious. If you're visiting from Spain, they'll even make you a good "cortado" coffee!
