Argyll Guest House

We could hear noise from the other rooms and footsteps in the upstairs corridors, as there wasn’t much soundproofing. Still, the Argyll guest house met our expectations for a one-night stay in Glasgow. The room was clean and lovely, with curtains and pillows in kilt colours that gave it a Scottish feel. The staff were kind and helpful. Breakfast was included and had plenty of food, though I didn’t like it. The bus stop is a one-minute walk away, and the centre is about 15 minutes by bus.

My husband barely slept before his early departure from Glasgow because the bed was so uncomfortable. We booked Argyll Guest House for that one night so he could get a decent rest, but we won’t be staying there again.

I’d had a pleasant stay at Argyll Guest House, Glasgow, in 2022, so I booked again through Booking.com. This visit was a real disappointment. After checking in very late, I was warmly welcomed by reception staff. They asked what time I wanted breakfast and said the latest slot was 9:30 am. I agreed, and my name was clearly written beside that time. At exactly 9:30 the next morning, I went into the breakfast room. A gentleman greeted me, served coffee and invited me to the buffet. As I was approaching it, a woman came in abruptly and spoke in a way that was hard to understand. It became clear she was telling me to leave at once because “breakfast finished.” The gentleman tried to step in politely, but she kept interrupting him and he couldn’t help further. I felt embarrassed and uncomfortable, so I left and complained to reception right away. The receptionist listened patiently, but nobody has followed up or offered a resolution. Management should provide better staff training. The incident gave me the impression that this staff member was bullying me and her colleagues. The treatment was unacceptable, and the experience was shockingly poor. After my good stay before, this has greatly lowered my impression of Argyll Guest House.

The good parts were the location and the breakfast coffee. The rest left us feeling uneasy: the room was clean, but stains and a dated atmosphere gave it a yucky feel, and it wasn’t cheap. We’d seen decent ratings, but don’t think they’re deserved. We booked two nights but left after one because the beds were awful and we needed to catch up on sleep elsewhere. The first room felt like a prison (see photos), so we asked to switch. The next one had a high ceiling, but the beds were no better. My wife could feel every spring digging into her, and ended up on the dirty, dated carpet. The other mattress sagged in the middle. The room was also hot, even after it cooled off outside in the evening. You could hear people in the bar next door and the local traffic, though it got quieter after midnight.
