We'd gone for a weekend away and had been walking in Castleton, then decided to stay nearby for dinner at this pub. The online menu looked appealing to both of us, but it was out of date, and the main dish we wanted was no longer offered. That wasn't a misunderstanding on our part. The restaurant door was locked when we arrived, so we went to the bar, where the seats were full. We asked the young man behind the bar for a table because we wanted food. He said he couldn't seat us in the restaurant, even though from the window we could see it was less than a third full. Then he said we'd have to fight for a seat. I could understand that if we'd only wanted a drink and needed to stay in the bar area, but it felt unhelpful when we were trying to eat. By the time a table opened up and we realised half the online menu wasn't available, we no longer wanted to eat there. It seemed they were short-staffed, as my partner heard the two barmen talking about a sick coworker who'd left early. This place seems to care little about customers unless they're willing to pay £5 per head in advance to reserve a table.

The food was varied, tasty, generous and well priced, and we were all happy with what we ate during our one night there. It seems to be a popular spot with the locals, which can be a good recommendation in itself.

We popped in for a drink and to watch rugby, then spotted the Valentine's offer: three courses and a bottle of fizz for just £60 for two. Though the restaurant was fully booked, they let us enjoy the meal at our table in the bar, which suited us fine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. We got a fresh red rose and a chilled bottle of prosecco, and all three courses were delicious. Service was superb and the price was extremely good value. Thanks for a lovely evening ❤️

The staff were friendly, and the location was good, with parking on site. Check-in was quick. We stayed for a few days in April and enjoyed the pub experience. The room was basic but comfortable, with a hot water pot for tea and coffee and biscuits each day. We had the English-style breakfast every morning, and the pub also serves dinner.

After a day hiking, we took a chance on this lovely pub for tea and were glad we did. The service and meals were great, with generous prices and portion sizes, especially for the children.
