I slept really well, with hardly any noise and blackout curtains. The ensuite shower room is well designed, with no damp building up and an extractor fan that’s barely noticeable. There are wall mounted dispensers for liquid soap and conditioning shampoo. The room also has plenty of clothes hangers, shelves, a desk and chair, a good wall mounted flat screen TV, and white bed linen and towels. There’s an “Eat all you like” breakfast on the ground floor. The decor is better suited to business stays. It’s good value compared with other places, all things considered. The hotel sits at the edge of Hull city centre, an easy walk away, with the police station only a few minutes from it. Security is good: reception is staffed around the clock, usually by two people. After 11 p.m., you need your room pass to get into the hotel and use the lifts.

The staff were very, very friendly and accommodating. They helped with last minute changes to my check-in and check-out times, and even offered to hold my luggage. The room was comfortable and spotless, and I couldn’t find a single fault with it or the hotel as a whole. It’s very affordable without skimping on quality. Food and drink are available 24 hours and were very cheap, especially given the quality and how easy they were to get.

The rooms are very basic and a bit tired, as you’d expect from a budget hotel. Still, the pod style bathroom had a good shower with plenty of hot water, and the hotel was quiet overnight. Wetherspoons is less than a five minute walk away, and we enjoyed breakfast there. It’s a 10-15 minute walk to the old town, with lots of historic pubs and free museums. Thanks to the very helpful, friendly staff who did their utmost to sort out an issue. They’re a credit to the hotel and one reason we’d happily come back.

Previous stays have been good, but this time was a mess. In our first room, the toilet wouldn’t flush and the heating was broken, so it was freezing. They gave us a plug-in heater, but it did nothing. We were moved to room 14, where the heating stopped working after we switched it off to go out. When we got back, it wouldn’t turn on, so that room was freezing too. We had to use the heater again, with no luck. No one told us there’d be a fire alarm test, and it panicked my partner and me. We also had to ask for more toilet roll and were given just one, and there were more problems with the toilet. Please make sure the rooms are all the same. Food isn’t included, so you have to pay separately or go out to get some. There’s no access to a microwave, so we had to get pot noodles.

The lift was out, so I had to walk up all four flights of stairs. The TV remote barely worked. Otherwise, it was decent enough, clean and tidy throughout with a modern feel, and nice and quiet on the top floor.
