Ocean Backpackers

Our kayak club stays here for weekends in north Devon. The shared rooms and facilities are just right for what we need. It’s ideally placed in the middle of ilfracombe, right beside the car park next door. Perfect!

I’ve stayed twice, and Ocean Backpackers has been clean, friendly, and safe each time. It’s an affordable family hostel, and in my dorm the beds had lockers and charging ports for devices. There’s a good communal area for working on a laptop or spending time with friends and family. The kitchen is a real plus: it’s large and well stocked, with room for several people or groups to cook at once. Eating out is an option, but I liked saving money by cooking there sometimes. The staff are professional and welcoming, and happy to suggest things to do nearby. The building has a friendly feel, but it also suits introverts who just want to read in the common lounge. It’s right by the Ilfracombe harbour, with a bus stop at the back connecting to routes for other towns and local sites. I once paid more for a dirtier room and fewer amenities at a pricier traditional Hotel in town. Ocean Backpackers is one of the cleanest, safest, friendliest places I’ve stayed, and it’s a great option for solo travelers or families of any age. Five stars all around, and I can’t wait to come back!

My sister and I spent four nights at Ocean Backpackers and felt comfortable and safe throughout. The staff were genuinely warm and welcoming. The hostel was clean and well cared for, with charming decor and a cozy, beachy feel that suited the area. It seemed like real thought had gone into making it practical and inviting. We had all the equipment we needed to cook in the kitchen. There were also books and board games, which made it easy to unwind or chat with other guests in the evenings and on rainy days. The homey feel was a nice part of the stay. Its central Ilfracombe location made exploring easy. Whether you're traveling alone, as a couple, or with family, it’s a good spot. We had a pleasant, comfortable visit and appreciated the thoughtful amenities and little extras. Definitely worth considering for a trip to Ilfracombe.

The staff seemed really nice, and the location was good. My own room was a bit smelly, sometimes with a sewage smell from the toilet. The bathroom was super tiny, but functional for one night, and the hand wash was really nice. You could hear people walking around and noise from outside. Fine for a short stay, as long as you keep expectations low.
