The location is stunning. We had glorious sunsets over the sea-loch, and the mornings were just as beautiful. You can sit outside the pub and see otters swim past, and we were even treated to displays from dolphins and porpoises. It's a lovely drive around the coast for more wildlife watching if the otters don't visit while you're at the pub. We had two nights here and are looking forward to coming back. The staff were all wonderful, especially Sarah, who was so helpful and friendly while staying professional. They put you at ease and made you feel at home. Our room was large and spacious, with a big comfy bed, a good shower and quiet nights. I'd recommend booking early and trying to get a room with a view. The food was super, much better than I expected. I had fabulous sole, and the chicken burger and steak pie were great too. Breakfast suited us well as a self-service meal, since we could go as early as 6am instead of waiting. There was a good selection of cereal, yoghurt, fruit, porridge, croissants, a yummy blueberry muffin, toast, smoked salmon, ham, cheese and good bean-to-cup coffee.
The Inn at Port nan Gael turned out to be part of the trip in its own right. I spent a few nights in a lovely pod on the campsite, enjoyed several delicious meals, and had beautiful views to take in while unwinding. The food and service were both great, and Fiona was a delight who really went the extra mile. Such a warm, welcoming place. I’d happily recommend it.
The burger was overcooked and a bit dry, and the so-called pie of the day was stew with puff pastry on the side, which doesn’t count as pie to me. I can see how it’s a cost-effective way to serve stew, though. The menu is limited, and the food didn’t seem especially carefully made. Seating is cramped too, with so many tables that you’re elbow to elbow with strangers. Service was okay and the people seemed friendly enough, but it didn’t match the high reviews. Maybe being near a campsite brings in regulars who are a bit biased. Average pub food.
We upgraded to a loft view, which was a lovely bonus, and there’s a little shop open all day that seems to have absolutely everything. Our room was fabulous, with great amenities, and the restaurant food was yummy. Fiona is amazing! We had a wonderful stay and I’d definitely come back.
The old world feel of this hotel and the peaceful countryside have left me really fond of the place. I picked it partly because it’s in the heart of MacGillivray country of Mull, so I knew I might be biased. We had a cozy, quaint ground-floor room that was still roomy enough, and the staff were terrific, friendly and welcoming. The restaurant had excellent food and atmosphere. It’s a lovely base for exploring Mull and Iona, and our dog was very happy in the fenced area. Since the inn is in a tiny hamlet, we also enjoyed simply walking along the road through the quiet countryside.
