The workmen threatened to keep working throughout our stay, so we eventually had to find somewhere else to stay. My husband and I arrived to find scaffolding outside our room, with no warning beforehand. The workmen were noisy all day, and we had to keep the cheap bedroom curtains closed to stop them looking into the room. That made it hard to take important calls, with all the noise and no privacy. The toilet window had no blind, so they could see straight in there too. The owner's answer was to have them put a plank over that window, making an already dark room even darker and dingier. The owner was extremely hostile, refused to ask the workmen to leave, and wouldn't answer our calls, only texting us. She gave my husband's mobile number to the workmen without his consent. One of them then messaged him to say, essentially, that we shouldn't expect to use our room during the day, despite us paying around £150 a day. We love Skye and have stayed there many times without problems, which made the whole experience especially disappointing. AVOID!! Worst place I've ever stayed.
This small guest house is in an excellent location, with comfortable rooms and a good bathroom. Communication with the host was excellent. There's no breakfast, but a café is only a two-minute walk away. No problems, and a very pleasant stay overall.
I found the place overpriced, especially with no breakfast. After I left a 7 out of 10 on Booking, the owner sent me a private message saying I wouldn't find anything cheaper and that I'd eaten all the room's included cookies and juice. They were supermarket items worth less than 5 euros, but that's beside the point. I've travelled a lot and never had that happen. The first thing to learn is to respect guests' opinions, whether you agree with them or not. This is one of the few one-star ratings I've given that I feel is truly deserved.
We came to Portree hoping to find a room for one night and knocked on the door of Braeside. Ruth, the owner, answered and was so friendly and easygoing that we ended up staying another night. She gave us great advice on what to see around the island. The location was excellent, the facilities were great, and our room was a good size, warm and well lit. We'd highly recommend it and will be back. Steve, Kate Lpool
What really made the late check-in easy was Ruth's kindness. I came back drenched from a lovely rainy SkyeBus tour and arrived a couple of minutes late. When she heard my luggage was still at my previous accommodation, she insisted I shouldn't go back out in the rain and drove me there to collect it. Thank you, Ruth, you were an angel! A note if you're carrying heavy bags or have a condition that makes stairs difficult: the rooms are at the top of the stairs. They're decorated in a lovely boutique style, with little touches that make the place feel like home. It was clean, warm and comfortable, just what I needed after hiking in the rain. For an early checkout, you can simply lock the door and return the key through the mail slot, which makes leaving for a tour, trek or connection easy. The location is right in the centre, just two corners from the main square and bus station. There are plenty of places to eat nearby, but book ahead since Portree is packed with tourists and restaurants can barely feed them all at once. If you get lucky or are too tired, there's a Co-Op across the street, open until pretty late and also very early if you need something for the road. The Scorrybreac Walk starts basically up the street, with lovely scenery around Portree. This was my second place to stay in Portree. I'd extended my trip shortly before leaving, after booking my first accommodation only through my original travel dates. That morning I left my bags at the previous place and joined a lovely Skye tour with the SkyeBus. All in all, a good experience!
